I don’t have many prized possessions, but this old poster follows me wherever I go. Judy at Carnegie Hall is one of those albums, like Pet Sounds, The Queen is Dead or Sweet Old World, that helps make life more understandable — and more bearable. Today, to commemorate Judy Garland’s centennial, I’ll listen to it “and swing it from Virginia/to Tennessee with all the love that’s in ya.” And I’ll also look for time to rewatch The Clock, my favorite Garland film, this weekend.
In keeping with the spirit of this website, I did a little digging to see if Garland’s younger daughter, Lorna Luft (of Grease 2 fame), had any TV movie credits. Behold, the poorly titled Fear Stalk from 1989, by director Larry Shaw. (I enjoyed his Mother Knows Best but wasn’t as keen on The Ultimate Lie.) The plot sounds rather thin: a purse thief stalks a producer in Beverly Hills.
Fear Stalk stars Jill Clayburgh and Stephen Macht, with a supporting cast that includes Luft, Lynne Thigpen and Sada Thompson. It currently streams free (with ads) on Amazon. One two-star user review there reads “Film was mildly interesting until she became the hysterical female.” (Think of all the other titles that accurately describes!) Clayburgh, of An Unmarried Woman, appears to have been slumming it; she replaced Kate Jackson, who dropped out after a cancer diagnosis. I’ll admit it sounds quite horrible, which is why it’s been added to my watchlist.
UPDATE: I “really shouldn’t have done it”/I “hadn’t any right,” as Judy might sing, but I watched Fear Stalk and here’s the review.

LOVE the poster and the LP too. Sweet Old World is a fave of mine as well. I learned to play it on the guitar many moons ago. I also saw Lucinda in concert years ago. I think she either had an “off night,” or, IMHO, she was drunk. It was not a great concert. Oooh, now I want to see the film with Lorna.

For my own amusement I will now imagine an inebriated Williams slurring her way through “Drunken Angel.”

BWHAHAHAH Yep, you’d be about right.
She was obviously dating a guitarist in her band, at the time, because she kept running across the stage, at times, and jumping into his arms, pretending to–ahem–have sexual relations with that man! I love the song Pineola, Lines Around your Eyes, and, more recently the song Sweet Side. And, Judy is and was amazing, period.
